One nation, without God…
Colton Pierce apprehends Abberants—those who display symptoms of faith—and quarantines them on a remote island to ensure public safety. Years prior, the government released a genetically-engineered super flu that destroyed the genes believed to be the biological source of spiritual experience in an effort to rid the world of terrorism. As an extractor with the Center for Theological Control, Colton is dedicated to the cause.
But Colton’s steadfast commitment is challenged when he learns his own son has been targeted for extraction. An underground militia, the Remnant, agrees to help Colton save his son in exchange for his assistance with their plan to free the Aberrants on the island.
Colton is faced with the most important decision of his life. Remain faithful to the CTC? Or give up everything to save his son?
1) Welcome to my blog, William. I’m intrigued by your new novel’s premise and your writing life in general, so I have a few questions for you. First, when, where, and how (outlines/plotting) do you write?
I really don’t outline when I write. I’ve tried it in the past, but it just doesn’t work out for me. I start to feel “locked into” the outline as opposed to “feeling” my way through it. I usually have a vague idea of where I will get in about twenty pages, but everything after that is completely up for grabs. For example, I had absolutely no idea how the Remnant would end when I began writing it. It was fun to go along for the ride and discover it as I wrote; in that way, writing is really the equivalent to exploring.
2) What is one of the most exciting experiences you’ve had in your lifetime and how has it influenced your novels?
Probably becoming a parent. I never thought it would impact my writing, but it certainly has. I usually am not aware of it when I’m writing, but when I’ve edited and gone back through the last few books I’ve written, I’ve noticed that so much of the stories deal with parenting. My daughters are now thirteen and eleven and many of the issues, triumphs and failures that I’ve experienced being a dad inevitably make their way into the stories.
3) What is your most favorite non-writing activity, the one that gives you the greatest joy?
I love being outside exercising. Whether I’m out on a run with my wife, a long walk, or stand up paddle boarding at the beach, I love being outside and enjoying the day. I actually write early in the morning because I feel like I’m “missing out” if I’m sitting inside and it’s a beautiful day outside.
4) What triggered the idea for a “gene believed to be the biological source of spiritual experience?”
I was at home and reading online about this idea that people might believe in God because of a genetic code. It’s been written about. There’s a book called The God Gene that explores this issue and it’s been written about elsewhere. I don’t actually agree that it is scientifically accurate, but as I read about it, a world of possibility opened up for a story. I began writing it immediately because I was so excited about it and the potential a story could have in dealing with this.
Thanks, William. I wish you much success with The Remnant and look forward to reading it myself.
