O is for Old-Fashioned

April 17, 2010 By: Patricia

Six things that make me feel old-fashioned:

1. I think kids should be allowed to play in the dirt more. Older adults do it. We call it gardening.

2. I don’t like talking on the phone. I hate cell phones, only carry one in case I have an emergency, and only turn it on when I want to make a call (usually because I have a flat tire or expect to get home much later than expected).

3. I believe in personal freedom and personal responsibility, and I also believe that my rights stop at my neighbor’s nose.

4. I think it would be good if all Americans had to spend one growing season working on a farm: walking the beans, cleaning out the chicken house, milking cows, baling hay.

5. I believe the news media should report the news, all of the news, accurately and without trying to sway public opinion. I want the truth, and I don’t give a rat’s patootie what some info hottie thinks.

6. I think patootie is a real word even if my dictionary doesn’t.

Okay, that’s my Saturday entry in the A to Z Blog Challenge. Hard to believe we only have eleven more posts to go. Of course, those eleven include the extra-challenging letters Q and X.

We take Sunday off for the challenge, but I’ll have something else for you. See you tomorrow.

I’m the same as you about the cell phones, but I’m sure glad they invented cordless phones. I’m not thrilled about talking on the phones, but if it were not for the phone I’d rarely get to talk to my kids, my mother, and most of my friends because I live so far from them and rarely get to see any of them.

Like many of you, I’m not a cell phone kinda guy. I like email and texting. The problem with cell phones is there are so many people who, once they say hello, that’s it. They can’t shut the heck up.

“O” is for old-fashioned. It seems today “honor” is old fashioned. As is having the back of your friend if it means inconvience or pain. Reading is old fashioned. Video is everything. Why talk face-to-face or write emails in complete sentences when you can twitter like a bird?

I’m old fashioned. I love your blog. Come check out mine, WRITING IN THE CROSSHAIRS, pull up a cyber-chair, and let’s chat for awhile.

I’d say being old fashion is a wonderful state of being. I think kids need to definitely play in the dirt more and get away from computer games. They need to be outside and enjoy life. But at the same time I think a big dose of #4 would do us all good. Enjoyed your pose.

I’m starting a new blog comment policy. Instead of coming back here to answer individual comments on a hit and miss basis, I’m going directly from my e-mail to your blog to read your post and leave a comment there. That way I can answer questions and respond to your posts in one step. We all need ways to save time, right? I’m hoping I have time to visit more blogs that way, and I love doing that.

Not sure about patootie, but then, I’m English. I remember my Gran used to say everyone’s got to get their fair share of dirt – made it much easier for me to let my sons play in the yard and get as grubby as they liked, and I’m sure it was good for them.

I don’t like talking on the phone either, but probably for different reasons, since I do text. I’m just hermity that way. Ha.

And I agree: kids should play in the dirt more.

    Nice post, Patricia πŸ˜‰

I guess I’m old-fashioned too πŸ™‚ Although I don’t use my cell phone a lot – I was glad to get one when my daughter started driving. It makes me feel so much better, especially when she is out at night.

I am so Old Fashioned !! Lately I find myself longing for no cell phones, no message machines that send me wandering through a frustrating labyrinth that sometimes gets me disconnected. I long to go back to 1955 and my grandfather’s orchards, and pick the apples he said I was too small to climb ladders and pick. To watch the women sorting apples in the sorting machine. etc etc You know what I mean . . .

    Hi, Patricia,
Thanks for another spot on blog! I reckon maybe I am about as old-fashioned as they come. I believe in all those things you mentioned. I believe in having fun wherever I am, also. See ya!

My blogging sisters, bless your hearts, we are of like mind across the ages and around the world. A big hug to all of you. Could there be a better place than bloggerdom?

Oh, piffle, I’m adding bloggerdom to my vocabulary too.

Rayna, I just spent 16+ days with our 30-something kids who are plugged in to their phones and computers all the time. This house was full of plinks and buzzes and hums and bells (plus the baby toys that talked and sang). I thought I was really an old fogie for happily ignoring my telephone when it rang (once).

Talli — I love computers too. I’m definitely not old-fashioned there. I was pretty computer-deprived while my kids were here and almost went through withdrawal — had to sneak my laptop into the bedroom and shut the door. πŸ™‚

Karen — (my writer friend), I love you too. I’ve found some of the most amazing people through the blogbooktour class and my blog-hopping adventures. I hope we stay connected for a long, long time.

Elspeth, have you ever had to turn to someone in line who’s speaking loudly on a cell phone and blatantly watch and listen until they realize they’re practically shouting their (often personal) conversation in your ear?

Hey, Kay! Kay’s another one of my best writing/blogging buddies, only we actually get to see each other from time to time since we both belong to Northern Colorado Writers.

I hate talking on the phone and avoid it at all costs!

I do love computers, though – so I’m going to considered myself not old-fashioned!

    Have a great weekend.

I believe very strongly in #s 1, 3, and 5, and # 2 describes me quite accurately. That could make me old fashioned too, but considering I am nearly two decades younger than you, you are definitely not old fashioned!
