Probably the silliest wish on my A to Z List is this one about developing chiseled abs. I’m so out of shape I feel like a puddle of Silly Putty.
I started an exercise class early in March and flunked out after reinjuring my bad shoulder and giving myself muscle spasms in my lower back. I was finally able to stand and walk upright just in time for last weekend’s Northern Colorado Writer’s Conference by playing hooky from the class for the last six sessions.
I’m at Chiseled in Rock blog today with a post about challenges (another C word, by some strange coincidence). Come on over and join the discussion.

That’s on my wish list, too.
Any time I start a workout routine I’m in major pain.

hah, what a great wish, but mine will never come to fruition unless it’s magic becuase I don’t care THAT much to make it a reality!

My vote is to try a Pilates class next time. Gentle but effective. I hope you just keep feeling better & better!

It’s so frustrating when your exercise class cause you to not be able to exercise! And it happens a lot π

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the only way I’m ever going to get chiseled abs is to freeze my belly and go at it with an ice pick! π

Backs can make life miserable. I think you convinced me not to take the exercise class. I don’t need to gimp any more than I do.

So annoying when you are injured doing what we’re told is healthy. Insult to injury when you can no longer even do that healthy exercise. The writing arms(s) are precious…take care of them. Abs not so useful to writers.

You wanna look like a Marine, you got to work like a Marine.
I used to have chiseled abs, back in college and well into my 30s. In 2006 I got clobbered during a soccer game, which tore my shoulder and sidelined me for two years. I was in a sling for almost 6mos, and it took well over 24mos before I could lift anything heavier than a computer bag.
Anyway. I’m with you. I miss my abs.
But, I don’t miss working out like a Marine!

If we’re dreaming here, I’ll take a six-pack of those abs as well! Not sure they’ll fit in the fridge with all the beer, though. : )
In all seriousness, really sorry to hear about your injury. I think (when it comes to fitness) we tend to dream too big and let our ideals get in the way of what is important: wellness and health. It isn’t necessarily about looking good in the mirror (if it is, then I’m very sad), it’s about making our bodies healthy. That doesn’t always–or usually–take intense exercise regimes and crazy diets. Just be active. If you get hurt or are so stressed about working out you quit doing it, then it isn’t going to help in the long run.
Jogging, walking (cardio), basic strength training and some stretching (yoga?) are going to do everyone a world of good. And hopefully not kill us.
Love the fact you’re working at it! Hope you feel better soon.

If you decide to go jogging at the ELC, beware the squirrels…very dangerous…especially the ones with bows and arrows.

This made me laugh out loud, Patricia. Thank you!

Oh, dear! So sorry you “flunked out” of exercise class.
Probably a good thing for you.
If you’re hurting, you’re probably doing it wrong — as in doing too much.
I used to be in a lot of pain until I end to the program of the chronic pain centre at one of our hospitals. (I’ve talked about that in my blog.) If you’re been away from exercising, you have to start very easily. The people who tell you, “No pain, no gain,” have it wrong.
Gently sculpting your silly putty would be so much better for you than using a chisel. Work at it, yes; but not until you hurt yourself.
Hope you’re feeling so much better now!

Oh, to have chiseled abs! I think I’ll add that to my wish list, too!

Pat – I don’t think that’s a silly wish at all. If it is, I’m going to the gym for all the wrong reasons… I think we have to find the exercise that suits us and do it.
