I’m Picking Grapes Today

October 1, 2013 By: Patricia

Most of today I’ll be harvesting our Concord grapes and getting them ready to make something good.

I cut down the bunches and dump them in a bucket. When I have a full bucket, I bring them inside and rinse them well under running water. I pull them off the stems, pop them into a freezer bag, and store the bags in the freezer.

Once I have all the grapes in, my friend Kerrie Flanagan, director of Northern Colorado Writers, is going to do the preserving. I’m hoping she’ll try out grape butter, because I already know how good her peach butter is. A piece of whole wheat toast with grape butter or grape jam will be mighty tasty this winter when I have my evening cup of chamomile tea….or hot chocolate.

By the way, there’s an awesome membership drive going on for NCW with some nice perks for new members and those members who refer them over the next 30 days. If you’re a writer or a business that provides services to writers, take a look at what NCW has to offer. Just click on that link above for more information.

I don’t have much luck with wine unless I have a professional group like Vintages do the work, John. The batch I tried at home last year turned musty and I had to throw it out.

Now I’m getting hungry again. Pat, I think those grapes might make some tasty wine, as well.

I was on blog break during your Great Flood. Hope you and your family didn’t suffer any damage. Those grapes sound really good!

I was on my feet so much yesterday that my legs ached and my knees were swollen. The next chore is to get the ladder out and get all those luscious bunches at the top, so I’m taking a day off before I finish. Of course, if I can persuade my husband to the ladder climbing, that would be even better.

I never had grape butter but it sounds interesting. I love frozen grapes though.
