The Rest of the Story About Five Posts per Week

April 24, 2015 By: Patricia

I’ve done some more reading around the web and have come to the conclusion that any post, any length, any content is better than no post…and it may be just as effective as five 1,000 word posts with amazing content. Post a photograph. Post a quote. Post a video.

That can’t be too hard.

Katie-Cat-Says-HiEspecially when I have all these photos of Katie Cat.

Now, the reason that I haven’t cited a lot of sources here for my blogging information is that I don’t know who any of these experts are and can’t vouch for the validity of the tentative conclusions I’ve reached. I’ve ordered a book called Blogging For Writers: How Authors & Writers Build Successful Blogs by Robin Houghton to see what she thinks on the subject. I’ll let you know more about that after I’ve read the book.

As you’ve tried to figure out all the ins and outs of establishing a presence on the web, social media, and online marketing, have you read any books you’d recommend?

This is just my opinion, Pat, so take it for that. But I’ve found that once you are blogging, people do get used to regular posts. So I agree that something – anything – is better than (especially unexpected) ‘blog silence). And it doesn’t have to always be a long, dense post. People like shorter, lighter things as well. And for my money (again, just my opinion!), establishing that blog relationship makes it easier to build a solid base of readers. And we get to see pictures of Katie 🙂

Good morning,Margot! I’ve pulled that unexpected blog silence a few times already this year, mostly because of my mother’s health issues and my own foot injury. I do know that’s a bit disconcerting for a regular follower. I don’t know how you manage to keep up with all those complex crime fiction posts, though. It seems like you’d be doing so much research to put them together you’d never have time to write your own novels. (Unless, of course, you have perfect recall of everything you read…that would be cool.)

All the info I’ve read about blog posts is that they should be consistent, whether it’s someone consistently posting three times a week or always once a month, so people know what to expect. I always post 2-3 times a week. Even if I have little or nothing, I’ll come up with something.

Hi Medeia! Consistency seems to be a number one rule for a lot of things, doesn’t it?

Well, you’ve already discovered the secret – cute cat photo. Draws people in every time.

I need to get my new camera out and start practicing, Alex. Hopefully I’ll be an expert by the time I can get out on the walking trails and see something besides the cat.

Thanks, Carol! I still have a lot of stuff to do here but I’m trying to take it slow so I don’t end up with too much clutter. My guest posts start up again in May. Keep me in mind if you need a host.

I wish I’d found some magic answer. Mostly I mix and match until something feels right for me and go from there. Good luck!

I copied your new address and will change the link to your blog in my sidebar. Looks great over here!
