I’m Back!

January 20, 2020 By: Patricia

I had knee replacement surgery on November 11th, 2019, and knew there were plenty of tasks I’d have to give up for two or three months. Blogging turned out to be the first activity to happily sit on the sidelines. The blog waited patiently for my return.

As did the gym at the Senior Center. But that’s another story…

My guiding word for writing in 2020 is FINISH! My goal is to finally complete all of my abandoned projects in their various draft forms. Most are simply waiting for revisions and/or a few rounds of self-editing. One or two might even be headed for the shredder and Delete queue. I developed the bad habit of setting projects aside in order to write new material to submit to my critique group. This year, the group will be getting a little bit of revised material and a whole bunch of progress reports as I clear one project after another from my To Do List.

First up is a short story I want to submit to mystery magazines.

I do intend to post to this blog at least once a week with mostly mini-reviews of the books I enjoy during my reading hours (early morning and just before bedtime). Occasionally I’ll give an update on my FINISH! projects and opine about writing and publishing from an older writer’s point of view.

I’ll also be around on Facebook and Twitter, especially now that I’ve accepted the position of Social Media Director for Rocky Mountain Mystery Writers of America (RMMWA).

Because I want to focus more on mysteries, it seemed appropriate to become more active in two of the organizations I belong to: RMMWA and Sisters in Crime. Although we were without a SinC chapter in Colorado for a few years, we now have a new and very active group that’s growing fast. Our Northern Colorado SinC-CO book club is also growing. Although we only read books written by SinC-CO members, the book club is open to non-members to read the scheduled book or story and attend meetings…or just attend to meet other readers of crime fiction.

I’ll post links to this blog when I do post, so hopefully you’ll drop by and say hi.

What do I do when I’m not writing? … by Karen C. Whalen

August 7, 2018 By: Patricia

There are periods of time when I don’t write, when I’m in between projects and just need to let my words simmer for a while. When I’m not writing, I’m reading books about the craft, or I’m reading other writers’ works for sheer pleasure, or I’m marketing, which means I’m scheduling book events and blogging. …Read More

Random Stuff: Hey, There’s a Dead Guy, Colorado Gold, and Big Brother

September 12, 2017 By: Patricia

I’ve been such a dud at blogging this summer as I try to pull my To Dos into a manageable list, determine my daily and weekly priorities as Colleen M. Story suggests in her new release, Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, and set some long-term goals. After all, I’m getting older and we only have so much …Read More

GETTING THE WORD OUT: Social media and I have an uneasy encounter … by Allan J. Emerson

May 28, 2015 By: Patricia

I think there’s a basic conflict for many writers, when it comes to marketing. By nature, we tend not to relish the role of salesperson. But nowadays, it’s not enough to write the best book you can. You have to publicize it too, even if your lack of skill at doing so leaves you feeling …Read More

Meet Patricia

I read, I write, I blog, and sometimes I do the laundry and cook. My 2014 novel, Dead Wrong, was a finalist in the thriller category of the 2015 Colorado Book Awards. Wishing Caswell Dead (Five Star/Cengage, December 20, 2017) is a historical mystery set in 1830s Illinois in the fictitious Village of Sangamon. The novel was a finalist for the 2018 Colorado Book Awards for General Fiction. Read More…
